FUNDRAISING IDEAS

Put £1 aside every time you start a book, and another £1 every time you finish it.

Ask your children to put 10p aside from their pocket money each week to help people in India to become literate and change their whole lives.

Keep a bowl at home and ask your guests to lighten their pockets by putting their spare change into it. They won’t even notice the money they are giving.

Have a dinner party and invite your guests each to contribute £10 towards the scheme, which would be enough to purchase 15 books for villagers to read.

Celebrate an anniversary or an important birthday by sponsoring a village reading scheme with £230 (which would sponsor a village reading group for a year), or an amount of your choice.

Sponsor a reading group in one of the villages for a year. We will keep you informed about the progress of the reading groups. We can also arrange for you to visit the project area if you decide to visit India.

Your reading group may decide to fundraise for the reading group. Decide what type of event you want to hold. It could be a sponsored event like a sponsored walk, sponsored read, sponsored parachute jump! Book sale or a Book swap may be more appealing for you. Organise events in libraries. Its up to you! .

Selling your unwanted books on e-bay can help you raise money to support the reading groups.

Reasons why you should support us?

Develop Cross Cultural understanding The British communities supporting the project will be exposed to facts and information about rural Indian cultures, and worldviews that they may otherwise not have contemplated. Cross Cultural understanding will help these communities learn more about themselves through learning about others. The literacy project will help them to understand, embrace and address cross cultural differences.

Promote International Development work. The project fits in with the “make poverty history” and “think globally act locally” campaigns that are currently being promoted in the arena of international development. The project is at a grassroots level, and will increase understanding of how an increase in literacy can improve the general living standards of poor rural communities in India. The project will therefore highlight that we all belong to a global community, and have a global responsibility to help those in the world who do not have access to things like Education, that we often take for granted in Western society. The project will encourage Community learning, and promote Global Citizenship which encourages us to recognise our responsibilities towards each other.
