Selection of villages
The villages show very low literacy rate and very high population of SC / STs. Only 20 % houses have latrines. It shows a lack of awareness. The population of villages is high, hence there will be 2 to 3 reading clubs in each village. The emphasis will be education in sanitation and disease prevention. There is no primary Health Centre in any of the villages selected and villagers have to walk 5 to 10 km for primary health care.

RANGAREDDY DISTRICT - PROJECT PARTNER No. 2: Department of Women Development & Child Welfare (ICDS programme)

Project area – Rajendranagar and Pargi mandals of Ranga Reddy districts.

List of villages
1.Mandal Rajendranagar: Pedda Thoopra, Kotha Thanda, Madfanpally Thanda, Mekalabanda Thanda, Burjugudda Thanda, Pedda Shapur Thanda, Alikol Thanda, Ramanjapur Thanda
2.Mandal Pargi: Thodapalli, Chigala, Rapole, Govindapur, Mittakodur

Selection of villages
All the villages have only a tribal population. Health and education (Schooling) facilities are remote. Average family income is very low. No sanitation education. There is a tremendous scope of child health development as the children are malnourished and mortality of infant is high in rate. Most of the club members would be adolescent girls and older women.

Selection of districts and organisations for the programme
The three districts of Andhra Pradesh selected for this programme are drought prone districts of Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh and have some of the most disadvantaged pockets of rural population.

We invited a number of organisations to apply to join the programme, and of those that expressed an interest, we made the selection of the organisations based on their experience and expertise, their area of work, the proposed target group, and their level of enthusiasm for working with us on the programme.

Both organisations work for the development of women and children, but the women in each of the areas come from different situations. In one area, the target group will be women who are mostly from Scheduled Castes. In the second, they are also Lambada tribespeople who are are women farmers.

How the Situation Analysis was carried out

The situation analysis was carried out by Ms Supriya Bahlerao, Director of SRAS Foundation accompanied by the Director of each of the three organisations visited. Two or three villages were visited in each project area, and the visits took place in May 2005.

In Warangal district, the area in which the organisation FRSF works, we visited the villages Singaram and Lakshmipur.  In Ranga Reddy district, where Integrated child development scheme is implemented by the state government Department of Women development & Child Welfare, we visited the Burjuguda Thanda and Thondapalli villages.

These were the sample villages that gave us a good idea about the people in that particular area and their problems
