ENCOURAGING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND VOLUNTARY ACTION - UNLTD IN SOUTH AFRICA

If the problems of poverty in the world are to be solved, then the ideas and creative energies of people living in poorer countries should be a driving force. This is why we sought to establish UnLtd first in India and then three years later in 2010 in South Africa.

The initiative is being developed by Heather Brandon in the UK assisted by Kathy Watters and Francois Bonnici in Cape Town, where we have established a charitable trust. There first awards were made in 2010, and we are currently seeking funds in South Africa and the UK for a full launch in 2011.

In order to maximise the effectiveness of what is at the moment a relatively small operation, UnLtd South Africa is strategically focusing its resources in the Western Cape and on social entrepreneurs from 2 specific groups:

• Individuals living/working in the shantytown and slum areas of Khayalitsha, Nyanga, Guguletu, Phillipi and Cape Town to target people with direct access and experience of some of the most acute social problems.
• College students and recent graduates, to tap into their natural energies, ideas and connections, and to build on the increasing focus on entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship.

In the next phase, the programme will be launched in Gauteng Province/Johannesburg. UnLtd South Africa works closely with organisations such as The Business Place, Shanduka Black Umbrellas and RaizCorp to provide support to its award winners.
